Food
Experience
Summary:
Competent, pleasant, not profound.
Details:
Abuelo’s Mexican Embassy is an imposing establishment inside and out. Two stories tall, the building looks like an embassy, not a casual dining eatery. Inside, the central dining area is a mock atrium with a domed blue sky-ceiling with fluffy painted clouds. Booth seating is available on the perimeter.
The menu is leather-bound, heavy, but not overly extensive. Portions tend to the generous, and prices range in the $10-$20 range for dinners. Cocktails and beer are offered on a separate menu.
The food is competent, but not exciting. While Abuelo’s seems to have attempted to move beyond the everything-tastes-the-same quality of much commercial Mexican fare, it hasn’t been entirely successful. This seems to be OK with the Abuelo’s clientele -- the place was packed early on a dreary December evening. Service was friendly and prompt.
